Antigone
If you enjoyed Antigone, check out these films:
- Antigone (Deraspe, 2019): a modern adaptation of Antigone by a female director. Set in modern Montreal, this film follows the story of a teenage girl and Algerian refugee named Antigone (shocker) who’s trying to save her brother from deportation.

2. The Year of the Cannibals (Cavani, 1969): another adaptation directed by a woman, The Year of the Cannibals is a film about a repressive government regime that murders citizens and leaves their bodies in the streets as a symbol to others. Antigone in this story, like in the play, is on a mission to bury her brother against government commands. (Content warning for sex and nudity, violence and gore, profanity)
3. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (Jones, 2005): “When brash Texas border officer Mike Norton wrongfully kills and buries the friend and ranch hand of Pete Perkins, the latter is reminded of a promise he made to bury his friend, Melquiades Estrada, in his Mexican home town. He kidnaps Norton and exhumes Estrada’s corpse, and the odd caravan sets out on horseback for Mexico” (Letterboxd).
